About Us
Welcome to the After-School Plus (A+) Program. The A+ Program is the outcome of a joint effort of former Governor John Waihee’s Subcabinet on Early Childhood Education and Child Care (chaired by former Governor Ben Cayetano who was Lieutenant Governor at that time), the Hawaii State Board of Education and the Hawaii State Department of Education in 1989.
Mission
The mission of the A+ Program is to reduce the high incidence of latchkey children and provide affordable after- school child care services to children in the public elementary schools whose parents work, attend school or are in job training programs. The program also provides a safe, secure and nurturing environment with a rich variety of activities for the children.

- To enhance the relationship between home and school in collaboratively meeting the needs of children.
- To support the social-emotional and physical development of children.

Baseline qualifications for the Site Coordinator, Group Leader, and Program Aide roles within the After-School Plus (A+) Program are listed below. Please note: Some private providers may have additional requirements, but if you meet the baseline qualifications, you're already well on your way to joining the A+ team.
Site Coordinators oversee the full operation, organization, and management of the A+ Program at a school site.
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
- Education: High school diploma or GED, and/or two years of college experience in a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of one year of progressively responsible work experience in A+ programs and operations.
Group Leaders support the Site Coordinator and serve as instructional leaders for small student groups.
- Age: At least 18 years old.
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Experience: At least one year of progressively responsible A+ experience as a Program Aide.
Program Aides assist Site Coordinators and Group Leaders with supervision, activities, and daily program operations.
- Age: At least 16 years of age.
- Education: Preference for individuals with a high school education or college underclassmen interested in teaching.
Mandatory Clearances for All A+ Positions
All A+ staff -- regardless of role -- must complete the following:
- Background Clearance: Fingerprinting and DHS background checks.
- Health and Safety Training: Completion of an initial health and safety assessment within 45 days of hire, plus eight hours of ongoing training annually.
- Certifications: At least one staff member on-site must hold current First Aid and CPR certification. Most providers require Site Coordinators and Group Leaders to maintain these certifications.
